Quick question: How many hats do you own?

And among those, how many of them are fun ball caps?

If you didn’t already know, ball caps are the most popular hat options on earth. Seriously!

According to the Ask Your Target Market (AYTM) survey, over 50% of hat wearers say that baseball caps are their hat of choice. And there’s no surprise why…

Baseball caps are very versatile. From fun and funky ball caps to novelty snapbacks and fitted hats, these caps come in multiple designs, materials, styles, and colors.

Now, if you don’t own a baseball cap yet, don't worry. There are many other types of caps out there that can enhance your style, like bucket or even winter hats. Which we’ll talk more about in just a second.

That said, if there’s one thing we can all attest to, it’s that caps are worn by many people worldwide for many reasons.

Not only are they used to make a fashion statement, but they help shield your eyes from the sun and can come in handy for covering up a bad hair day.

However, hats are one of those fashion accessories that we sorta take for granted. Especially when it comes to ball caps that have funky patterns or novelty designs.

Maybe it’s because most people are unaware that they don’t have to be basic or plain. Or maybe it’s simply because they historically centered around displaying unique art on the material that sits on your head.

In this article, we’re exploring everything you’ve ever wanted to know about fun baseball caps, and other types of hats as well.

We’ll even reveal to you which ones are trending right now and how to style a fun baseball cap

And as a bonus, we’re gonna fill you in on which brand makes the best caps.

Once you’re done reading this article, you’ll never look at a hat the same way again.

Let’s start with the…

History of Hats

Believe it or not, hats go way back in history. We’re talkin’ Ancient Egyptian times!

As it turns out, historians have uncovered artwork from ancient civilizations showcasing head coverings.

Researchers concluded that Egyptians of the higher class would often wear headdresses to protect their shaved heads from harsh elements and to show off their status.

These head coverings also held religious and ceremonial significance and were often worn by people in leadership.

Historians also discovered other ancient artworks that showcased head coverings and hats worn during the Roman Empire and throughout China.

The Greek Phrygian cap, which looks very similar to a smurf’s cap, was once worn by slaves.

They would wear the Phrygian cap as a symbol of freedom during the French Revolution.

In both southern China and Southeast Asia, the people of the Miao group would show off their artistic side by creating headdresses filled with elaborate embroidery and jewelry.

If you love sun hats, you may be surprised to learn that the first recorded sun hat was worn by ancient Greeks. It was called the Petasus.

It was made up of leather, straw, or wool felt. It had a relaxed brim and resembled the traditional straw hat we see today.

It wasn’t until the 1800’s that we started to see hat fashion take off. While women were known for wearing traditional bonnets, soon those bonnets became larger and more elaborate in artistry.

Men were seen wearing those old-school top hats, while military officials were always seen wearing their uniform complete with their signature bicorne hat.

During the mid-1860s men were sporting the traditional cowboy hat in the wild west of America.

In Mexican culture, we see the unique Sombrero, which was created to provide shade from the sun for people who worked out in the field.

But today the sombrero is adorned with artistic jewelry and patterns. It has become a festive fashion piece that’s used for celebrations.

Even the Pope wears a head covering hat, called a Triregnum. Which is designed with fine fabrics and offers a very unique, artistic look.

Now, it’s unclear who invented the hat. But it's safe to say that this type of headwear has been around for a long time.

That said, of all the hats in the fashion industry, the baseball cap is the most popular and iconic.

But if you’ve noticed, hats were blank canvases for fashion artists to display their artwork on people’s heads.

This brings us to the…

History of Baseball Caps

When baseball was first invented in the 1800s, baseball players could wear whatever brimmed hat they wanted to use for keeping the sun out of their eyes.

Fun fact: The first baseball cap was made of straw.

As years went by, the baseball cap we all know and love started to take shape. It was made of merino wool and had an attached visor, better known as a “bill”.

Since the late 1890’s the baseball hat has gone through many changes.

The front bill has changed in length and firmness. Holes were added to the top of the crown to create airflow. And instead of using wool, the baseball caps were designed out of polyester to create a more comfortable fit.

Up until the 1970s, ball caps were primarily only worn by baseball players, but soon people began wearing them as fashion accessories.

They found that ball caps were easy to wear and perfect to display their favorite sports team, fun catchphrase, or cool designs.

In fact, in 2005 the Dalai Lama was photographed sporting a Washington Nationals novelty fitted hat.

That’s what makes ball caps so special. They’re a clothing accessory that you can wear to show off your unique style, interests, and fashion taste.

Many confuse the baseball hat with a dad hat and it's understandable because they're so similar. The main difference is the front lining. A ball cap has a front lining while the dad hat doesn't.

Today, you can find a variety of fun baseball hat options just about anywhere. There’s been a massive rise in novelty fitted hats that offer bright colors, funky designs, and unique patterns.

Now, let’s look at…

What Hats are Trending Right Now?

You’d be surprised at how many different hats are trending right now. While novelty fitted hats, like ball caps, are by far the most trending headwear options on the market, there are a few others that you may want to consider.

Floppy Hats

Also known as sun hats, these have gained a lot of attention. Their oversized diameter helps shield the head, neck, and face from the sun.

They’re primarily worn for gardening or at the beach. But you’ll also see them at festivals and outdoor concerts.

Beanies

Also called a toboggan, or a toque in Canada, the beanie is typically worn in the fall and winter. It’s usually made of wool or cotton, and it’s designed to keep your head warm.

However, many people today wear beanies as a fashion accessory. You’ll usually see them worn at schools, by artists in the music industry, and during the colder seasons.

They come in various colors and designs, making them great accessories to display your interests and personality.

Fedoras

The Fedora has gained a lot of popularity. They have a short but soft brim and an indented crown. They’re typically worn by men, but women have started to sport them around as well.

Fedoras offer a retro style and are usually seen in bigger cities.

Fitted Caps

This is a type of baseball cap and is primarily worn in Major League Baseball. They often sport the baseball team logo and are designed to keep the sun out of the player’s eyes.

A fitted cap is a fun cap to wear, especially when you're out playing baseball or just hanging with friends.

Today there’s a huge trend of novelty fitted hats, most of which display crazy patterns, funky designs, and bright colors.

Bucket Hats

This is designed with a wide, downward-sloping brim. From cotton and denim to canvas and wool, bucket hats are made of many different types of material.

They first gained a lot of attention in the 1980s from hip-hop artists, but they’ve quickly become a true fashion accessory for everyday wear.

A bucket hat is typically worn throughout the year, but they’re especially great for the beach, festivals, and during summer.

Much like the trend with fitted caps, the bucket hat is now being designed with unique patterns and bright colors.

Funky Snapback Hats

This is yet another variation of the baseball cap. It gets its name from having an adjustable strap in the back that snaps in place once you find the right fit on your head.

It first gained a lot of popularity in the hip-hop community, through rap artists like Tupac and Ice Cube.

There are many different types of funky snapbacks, some of which sport one-of-a-kind artworks, sayings, etc. Other novelty snapbacks or trucker hats feature popular logos and sports teams.

But today, you’ll find that more and more people are searching for hats that offer unique designs, bright colors, and funky patterns.

Snapbacks and other interesting ball caps are the most popular headwear worn in North America.

However, you’ll likely see awesome ball caps, like the traditional baseball hat in Europe as well.

While there are many other types to choose from, the options listed above are the ones that have gained a lot of attention over the last few years.

But it’s the fun caps, like colorful baseball hats, funky snapbacks, and even novelty fitted bucket hats are by far the most trending on the market today.

So…
